DHAKA, Nov 26, 2025 (BSS) - The interim government today appointed afresh district police chiefs of superintendents of police (SPs) at all the 64 administrative districts using the lottery procedure, accomplished at the Chief Adviser’s (CA) official Jamuna residence, ahead of the planned national election in February.

Officials familiar with the development at the Home Ministry and Police Headquarters said BCS police cadre officials of the 25th, 27th, and 28th batches were considered for the lottery, which, however, excluded officers who previously served as district police chiefs.

They said police’s acting inspector general (IGP) and Dhaka metropolitan police commissioner SM Sazzat Ali, senior home ministry officials, and CA office representatives witnessed the lottery.

“The lottery method was adopted to ensure transparency and prevent controversies surrounding election-time policing,” one of the officials said.

He said the police administration was also expected to carry out a major reshuffle at the level of deputy inspectors general (DIG) and police station chiefs (OCs) soon using the lottery system.

According to the officials a list of qualified inspectors for appointment as officers in charge or OCs at police stations were prepared for the lottery.

The home ministry by now issued a notification that suggested most of the SPs were serving as district police chiefs while the lottery changed their workplaces with same position.

Only 14 SPs were entrusted with other assignments at different police units.
