Legal aid secures Tk 278cr compensation for poor litigants

DHAKA, Sept 9, 2025 (BSS) - The National Legal Aid Services Organization (NLASO) has helped underprivileged litigants secure compensation totaling Tk 278 crore through its legal assistance programme.
The NLASO disclosed the figure in a report on its website, covering legal assistance provided from 2009 to July 2025. 

Initially launched at the district level for underprivileged communities, the service was later expanded to the Supreme Court, Dhaka and Chattogram Labour Legal Aid Cells, and prisons nationwide.

According to the report, a total of Tk 278 crore 16 lakh 65 thousand 293 was secured in pre- and post-case compensation for underprivileged litigants.

Of this, Tk 271 crore 47 lakh 39 thousand 78 was secured through 64 district Legal Aid offices, while Tk 6 crore 69 lakh 26 thousand 215 was obtained through the Dhaka and Chattogram Labour Legal Aid Cells.

The report also mentioned that 12 lakh 61 thousand 650 individuals received legal assistance through Legal Aid. 

Between 2009 and July 2025, these beneficiaries obtained government-funded legal support under the NLASO through 64 district offices, the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, the Dhaka and Chattogram Labour Legal Aid Cells, and the National Legal Aid Helpline Call Centre (toll-free '16430'). 

Among them, 29,529 received assistance from the Supreme Court Legal Aid Office, followed by 10,12,777 through the 64 district offices, 29,448 via the Dhaka and Chattogram Labour Legal Aid Cells, and 1,89,896 through the Helpline Call Centre.

The government-funded service, provided under the Legal Aid Services Act, aims to support financially underprivileged and incapable litigants.
The National Legal Aid Services Organization operates under the Law and Justice Division of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
