DHAKA, Sept 3, 2025 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today cleared the way for holding the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election on the scheduled date of September 9, as it upheld an order passed by its Judge-in-Chamber in this regard.

The Appellate Division full bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order after hearing a civil miscellaneous petition.

Senior Advocate Ahasanul Karim and Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua moved the plea before the court, while Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir argued for Dhaka University. Barrister Imran A. Siddiq stood for SM Farhad, a general secretary candidate from the Oikyaboddho Shikkharthi Jote panel.

Appellate Division Judge-in-Chamber Justice Farah Mahbub on September 1 stayed a High Court order that had suspended the DUCSU election until October 30.

"Stay till filing of the civil miscellaneous petition," Justice Farah Mahbub noted in her order.

Earlier on the same day, a High Court division bench of Justice Md Habibul Gani and Justice Sk Tahsin Ali had stayed the DUCSU election following a writ petition filed by BM Fahmida Alam, a candidate for liberation war and democratic movement affairs secretary from the Left Alliance panel.

The writ petition challenged the legitimacy of the candidacy of SM Farhad.
