DHAKA, Nov 25, 2021 (BSS) - The Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry today temporarily suspended Jahangir Alam as Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) mayor for conducting a fair investigation into the allegations, including embezzlement of government funds and land grabbing, raised against him.
"As per 12(1) section of the City Corporation Act 2009, Mohammad Jahangir Alam has been temporarily suspended from the post of GCC mayor for conducting a fair investigation (into allegations raised against him)," said a Local Government Division notification issued this afternoon.
According to the notification, allegations of fake tendering, RFQ, illogical recruitment of manpower in different posts, emblazing money by making bills showing same work in different project marking the Bishwa Ijtema and not depositing money coming from hat-bazar leases in proper accounts have been raised against Jahangir.
He has also been accused of not giving his opinion to the authorities concerned about the allegation of land grabbing and widening roads without giving compensation to the land owners, it said.
The notification said aforesaid allegations are tantamount to abusing power, activities contrary to rules and regulations, corruption and deliberate misruling, which is removable offence as per the section 13(1)(Gha) of the City Corporation Act 2009.
Besides, the ministry appointed a three-member mayoral panel to run the GCC, said another notification of the LGD.
The panel mayors are Asadur Rahman Kiran, councilor of 43 no general ward, Md Abdul Alim Molla, councilor of 52 no general ward and Mst Ayesha Akter, councilor of 10 no served ward.
Jahangir Alam has been asked to hand over the charge of mayor to the senior panel member within three days after received this order.
