DHAKA, July 25, 2025 (BSS) - Another child succumbed to burn injuries at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS), raising the death toll to 33 from Monday's fighter jet crash at Milestone School and College in the capital's Uttara.
A 13-year-old boy, Makin, breathed his last at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital around 1:05pm today.
Earlier, Tasmin Afroz Ayman, 10, succumbed to her burn injuries at the Female High Dependency Unit (FHDU) of the institute around 9:30am.
Residential Surgeon of the institute Shawon Bin Rahman said that Ayman died with 45 percent burn injuries and Manik with 70 percent burns.
Ayman was a fourth-grade student of Milestone School and College.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the death toll in the aircraft crash stood at 33.
With the latest deaths, 15 have so far died at the NIBPS, one at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), 15 at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), and one at Shaheed Monsur Ali Medical College Hospital.
On Thursday, 15-year-old Mahia died around 4:30pm, while 12-year-old Mahatab passed away at 1:50pm at the burn institute.
Fifty people with burn injuries are now undergoing treatment at different hospitals in the capital.
So far, 40 people, including five with critical burn injuries, are now undergoing treatment at the burn institute.
The institute has been providing treatment to the burn-injured in consultation with foreign medical teams.
Identities of two out of the 32 deceased are yet to be confirmed.
The DNA Forensic Lab of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been working to ascertain their identities through DNA testing.
On Thursday, CID confirmed the identities of five female children through testing 11 DNA samples.
Earlier on Monday, an FT-7 fighter jet of the Bangladesh Air Force slammed into a two-storey building of Milestone School and College at Uttara minutes after taking off around 1pm due to a mechanical fault.
The pilot of the plane, Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam, also died in the crash.
