RANGAMATI, July 21, 2025 (BSS) - The Kaptai Karnaphuli Hydropower Station in Rangamati has set a new record by generating 220 megawatts (MW) of electricity till Sunday night - the highest in the past one year.
The power generation increased as all five units of the plant came into operation following a rise in the water level of Kaptai Lake, said Engineer Mahmud Hasan, Manager of Kaptai Hydropower Station.
Of the five units, unit 1 and 2 jointly generated 92 MW, unit 3 generated 48 MW, and units 4 and 5 together produced 80 MW.
Earlier, the highest production from the five units was 218 MW on July 15. The plant's total maximum generation capacity is 242 MW.
According to the control room sources of the hydropower plant, the water level at Kaptai Lake was 98.78 feet till 8pm on July 20. As per the rule curve, the ideal water level should be 87.04 feet. The lake's maximum water holding capacity is 108 feet.
Earlier, the plant could not run all five units due to a severe water crisis. However, due to increased rainfall from the end of May this year, four units became operational. The fifth unit was added at 8pm on July 9, pushing the generation to around 212 MW that day.
The electricity generated at Kaptai is being supplied to the national grid.
