DHAKA, July 16, 2025 (BSS)—Bangladesh ended Sri Lanka tour in emphatic fashion, having sealed its first ever T20 series victory over the hosts after their comprehensive eight-wicket victory in the series-deciding third game at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today.
The visiting side which lost the two-match Test series 1-0 and three-match ODI series 2-1, took the three-match T20 series 2-1.
They lost the first T20 by seven wickets but levelled the series with 83-run victory, which was their largest win ever against any Test nation. Bangladesh put the final nail in Sri Lanka’s coffin now with this landmark victory.
Offspinner Mahedi Hasan was key in the victory, having registered his career-best 4-11, a bowling performance that restricted Sri Lanka to paltry 132-7. Tanzid Hasan Tamim then made a mockery with Sri Lanka’s bowling, having blasted a 47 ball-73 with sustained aggression, leading Bangladesh to victory in just 16.3 overs.
But the start of the chase was a stark contrast to what transpired later. Nuwan Thushara trapped Parvez Hossain Emon leg-before in the first ball, handing him a golden duck, making Bangladesh shivering down the spine.
But Tanzid who hit one four and six sixes in his knock and captain Liton Das counterattacked, showing no sign of fear of Emon’s early fall.
They treated Lankan bowlers in disdain to add 74 runs in 52 balls to virtually kill the game. Kamindu Mendis broke the partnership, getting rid of Liton who made 32 off 26, following his match winning 50 ball-76 in the second game.
Tanzid raised his fifth fifty off 27 balls, flicking Jeffry Vandersay’s googly through third man for a boundary.
With Towhid Hridoy playing a second fiddle to him, he calmly led the side to the victory with plenty of deliveries unused. Hridoy was not out on 27 off 25.
Mahedi gave Bangladesh the momentum with the kind of bowling that needed against a power-packed batting line up of Sri Lanka. He got into act after Bangladesh had a breakthrough from pacer Shoriful Islam following Sri Lanka’s decision to bat first.
Shoriful had Kusal Mendis caught by Towhiod Hridoy in the first over of the innings for six before Mahedi struck thrice in his first three overs to jolt Lankan innings.
He started with the wicket of Kusal Perera, removing him with first-ball-duck and then got the better of Dinesh Chandimal who in his first T20 game in three years top-edged a delivery to point for 4.
Mahedi then turned one sharply to rattle the stump of Lankan captain Charith Asalanka who made just 4, leaving Sri Lanka 49-4.
Despite all of the top four batters were dismissed with single digit figure, Sri Lanka’s scoreboard was still rotated in good pace, largely thanks to Pathum Nissanka who seemed to have played on another surface.
However, Mahedi’s last over earned him the big fish when he dismissed Nissanka with a return catch after he scored 46 off 39 with four boundaries.
With 66-5 in 11th over, Sri Lanka looked to be in danger being out below 100 for the second consecutive time in the series.
Kamindu Mendis and Dasun Shanaka resisted. Shamim Patwari ended Kamindu’s resistance after he made 21 off 15 but Shanaka took the side past 100 with an unbeaten 25 ball-35, a knock included with four fours and two sixes.
