DHAKA, May 31, 2025 (BSS) - Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and Youth and Sports, has called for national awareness and unified action to eliminate tobacco use from society to mark "World No Tobacco Day".

In a message posted on his verified Facebook page, he said, "Every year, we have lost 1, 61,000 lives to just one toxic habit! Choose the path of awareness and change, not tobacco. May the death hidden behind the strategy not take anyone else away... Quit tobacco today."

Highlighting the deadly impact of tobacco-related diseases in Bangladesh, he stressed that quitting tobacco is not just a personal choice but a national responsibility.

"Quitting tobacco is essential for your own well-being and the welfare of the country. This is our collective responsibility," he stated.

On the occasion of "World No Tobacco Day", the advisor urged the public to remain vigilant against the marketing tactics of tobacco companies.

The Day is observed annually on May 31. It was established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987 to raise awareness about the health risks associated with tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce consumption.
