RAJSHAHI, May 19, 2025 (BSS) - Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today emphasized that plastic use must be curbed at every level.
"In particular, single-use polythene bags must have to be completely eliminated," she said, stressing the need to develop the habit of using cloth and jute bags instead of polythene.
Rizwana made the remarks while exchanging views with environmental organizations and students at the Rajshahi Circuit House this morning.
Highlighting the severe environmental damage caused by plastic and polythene shopping bags, she noted that the government has already undertaken various initiatives to encourage the public to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
The environment adviser added that public involvement, alongside government efforts, is essential for success in this regard.
Expressing concern over the trend of filling up ponds, canals, and other water bodies due to urban expansion, she said preserving natural water reservoirs is crucial for water conservation and maintaining groundwater balance.
Rizwana urged the younger generation to embrace an environment-friendly lifestyle, stating, "Every small step we take can lead to big changes."
Rajshahi Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhtar, General Secretary of Bangladesh Poriborton Andolon (BAPA) Alamgir Kabir, representatives of various environmental organizations, government officials and students joined the meeting.
All attendees emphasized the importance of strengthening awareness activities at the local level for environmental conservation.
The adviser instructed the Deputy Commissioner to take necessary measures for the restoration of ponds and water bodies and assured that her ministry would provide all-out support to this end.
