EC will take actions for breaching polls code: Alamgir

DHAKA, Dec 24, 2023 (BSS) - Election Commissioner Md Alamgir today said that the commission will take actions for breaching the electoral code of conduct.

"In different places across the country, some cases have been lodged with local police stations over conflicts between supporters of rival candidates. But decision like scrapping the candidature was not taken yet, taking the breaking of polls code into cognizance," he said, replying to a question from journalists at his office at Nirbachan Bhaban in the city.

Returning Officers (ROs), Executive and Judicial Magistrates and local police and administrations, however, remain vigilant against the violation of the electoral code of conduct, the commissioner added.

ROs and assistant ROs are issuing show-cause notices while executive and judicial magistrates are conducting the trials of violating polls code, Alamgir said, adding, "We are not issuing show-cause notice directly from the Election Commission (EC) except a few incidents".

Noting that reports of reply to show-cause notices are being submitted to the EC, he said in some cases, the accused are being fined and in some cases, the accused are being produced before the court after filing cases against them.

The commissioner said there is no scope of terming the January 7 polls as uncompetitive since candidates are competing with each other in every constituency, Alamgir said, adding that there are some incidents of breaching electoral code of conduct.

"The EC, however, is giving attention to even small violations of poll code like pasting posters on wall," he said.
