SANGSAD BHABAN, June 11, 2026 (BSS)- The government has allocated Taka 1,567.96 crore for waiving the farmer’s agricultural loans up to Taka 10,000 and its interest in the current fiscal year.
The allocation was proposed while Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled the national budget of 2026-27 fiscal year at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban here with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir-Bikram in the chair.
“In accordance with the commitments declared in the electoral manifesto of the present government, the program for waiving agricultural loans up to Taka 10,000 including interest in the crop, fisheries, and livestock sectors has already been implemented, and an allocation of Taka 1,567.96 crore has been provided in the current fiscal year for this purpose.”, said the finance minister in his budget speech.
Furthermore, there are plans to introduce agricultural insurance to address risks arising from natural disasters and to ensure stability in agricultural production.
To strengthen the agricultural sector, agricultural and rural credit programs will be expanded through scheduled banks. Loans at a 4 percent concessional interest rate for the cultivation of pulses, oilseeds, spices, and maize will continue in order to reduce import dependency.
At the same time, loan programs at 4 percent interest for salt cultivation in coastal areas and at 5 percent interest for farmers in hill districts through Bangladesh Krishi Bank will continue and expand, the minister said.
Under the Agricultural Rehabilitation and Incentive Program, free seeds, fertilizers, and other input support are being provided.
An initiative has been taken to develop a farmer database to ensure smooth distribution of fertilizers, seeds, and other agricultural inputs, as well as proper implementation of agricultural rehabilitation and incentive activities.
To maintain the flow of agricultural credit, interest subsidies will be provided through a refinancing program.
In addition, to create employment opportunities for youth, initiatives have been taken to formulate an “Agropreneurship Start-up Policy” and an “Agricultural Cooperative Policy” to ensure the balanced distribution of modern agricultural technology and agricultural credit on a large scale, the finance minister said.
