SANGSAD BHABAN, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud
Chowdhury today proposed a range of travel benefits for senior citizens,
including free train travel and discounted metro rail fares, as part of the
government's continued commitment to their welfare.
Presenting the national budget for fiscal year 2026-27 in the Jatiya Sangsad,
the finance minister emphasized the important contributions of elderly
citizens to the country's development and nation-building efforts.
"The role of senior citizens in nation-building is invaluable, and our
government remains steadfast in its commitment to their welfare," he told the
House.
To support the country's elderly population and ease their transportation
costs, Khosru proposed granting citizens aged 65 years and above full fare
exemption on government-owned public transport services, specifically trains.
In addition, he proposed a 25 percent reduction in fares for senior citizens
traveling on the metro rail.
The proposed measures are aimed at enhancing mobility, improving access to
services and recognizing the lifelong contributions of senior citizens to
society and the nation's progress.
If approved, the initiatives will provide significant financial relief to
elderly passengers while reinforcing the government's broader efforts to
strengthen social protection and improve the quality of life for senior
citizens across the country.
