SANGSAD BHABAN, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud
Chowdhury has proposed specific measures to make metro rail services more
affordable, including fare reductions for senior citizens and an extension of
existing VAT exemption facilities in the budget of Fiscal Year (FY) 2026-27.
While unveiling the maiden national budget of the BNP-led government at the
Jatiya Sangsad (JS), the finance minister proposed a 25 percent reduction in
fares for citizens aged 65 years and above when using metro rail services.
To help maintain affordable travel costs for passengers, the government has
also extended the existing VAT exemption on metro rail services until June
30, 2028.
According to budget documents, these measures are aimed at ensuring
accessible and cost-effective urban transport services.
