SANGSAD BHABAN, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - In the coming years, the government
will further modernise the water transport sector and develop it into a
sustainable and internationally competitive system through the implementation
of major projects such as the Matarbari Deep Sea Port and the Chattogram Bay
Terminal, expansion of port capacity, increased dredging activities and wider
adoption of digital and automation systems.
Revealing the government's plans in his budget speech, Finance Minister Amir
Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury today proposed an allocation of Taka 9,080 crore for
the Ministry of Shipping in the national budget for the fiscal year (FY)
2026-27.
He said the government intends to leverage regional advantages to boost
commerce, with a special focus on the maritime sector. He also reiterated the
commitment to establishing Chattogram as the country's commercial capital and
a regional trade and logistics hub.
The minister added that international trade and the integrated maritime
transport system are being further strengthened through the implementation of
the Matarbari Deep Sea Port, Chattogram Bay Terminal, Patenga Container
Terminal and Laldiya Container Terminal, along with the development of modern
port infrastructure.
