Dhaka, Sept 8, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today granted two days’ remand to 22-year-old Rahat Hossain in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of his 16-year-old wife Afra Khan in the DIT Plot area of Shyampur here.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam granted the remand after a hearing as the investigating officer sought a seven-day remand for Rahat.
Police arrested Rahat from his residence at DIT Plot in Shyampur on August 21. The following day, he was sent to jail.
According to the case statement, Rahat and Afra got married on May 8 in a family-arranged marriage. Since their marriage, Rahat had allegedly used obscene and abusive language against Afra over various issues.
On August 20, Rahat’s mother Sonia Akter informed the victim’s mother over the phone that Afra had fallen unconscious. Rahat’s father Liton Bepari and elder brother Saif Hossain took Afra to a local hospital in Sutrapur.
Victim’s mother went to the hospital and found marks of injuries on her daughter’s body.
Afra was subsequently referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the attending physician declared her dead.
Following the incident, her mother Lucky Akter filed a case with Shyampur Police Station on August 20 against four people, including Rahat.
The other three accused are Rahat’s mother Sonia Akter, father Liton Bepari and elder brother Saif Hossain.
