DHAKA, Nov 4, 2025 (BSS) – A court in the capital has issued arrest warrants against former lawmaker Mohammad Saiful Islam, elected with now disbanded Awami League ticket from Savar-Ashulia constituency, and 31 others on a murder charge.
Police said Islam and the rests were accused of shooting a youth, Biplob Mandol, at Ashulia dead during July uprising last year.
“Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam issued the warrants taking into contingence the complaint,” Ashulia police station sub-inspector Biswajit Biswas told BSS today.
He added all the accused were related to the disbanded party’s Ashulia unit.
Mandal’s family earlier lodged the case alleging that on August 5, 2024 the accused attacked protestors belonging to Students against Discriminating (SAD) with fire weapons and sticks at the bypass intersection at Ashulia.
Victim Mondal was running away along with others when bullets hit his neck prompting fellow protestors to take him to nearby Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialized Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The other accused included Awami League's Ashulia Union unit president Shamim Ahmed Sumon Bhuiyan and vice president Gias Uddin Molla.
On August 31, Biplob's sister Memi filed a murder case with Ashulia police station and on August 27, Police Bureau of Investigation’s sub inspector Imran Ahmed submitted a charge sheet against 45 people including the former MP.
Out of 45 accused in the chargesheet, 13 are now in jail.
