SANGSAD BHABAN, Sept 6, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr M A Muhit today expressed hope that the full-fledged liver transplant will be possible in Bangladesh from next year.

The state minister said this while responding to an emergency public notice raised by BNP lawmaker Rasheda Begum Hira (Women seat-3) under rules 71 of the rules of procedure at the Jatiya Sangsad here with Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal in the chair.

“We hope that the full-fledged liver transplant would be possible in the country from the end of the year or maximum from the beginning of the next year,” the state minister told the parliament.

Although the liver transplant was held at the BIRDEM and Bangladesh Medical University in various way but none of the previous governments had taken any initiative to establish sustainable liver transplant facilities in the country.

After coming to power, the present government has taken initiative to establish full-fledged liver transplant set up in Bangladesh.

Under the plan, the government has already completed procurement of necessary equipment at a cost of Taka 39 crore for the National Gastroliver Institute & Hospital.
Already five types of equipment already have reached the country and rest ten types of equipment will reach here this month.

“The country will need more two months for preparing the necessary manpower and full-fledged establishment. So, the full-fledged liver transplant will be possible to start in the country by end of this year or maximum from the beginning of the next year”, said the state minister.

Due to a shortage of skilled personnel and various other challenges, liver transplants have not been performed in Bangladesh. The government has now taken the initiative to start the programme. 

“This will allow patients to get treated within the country, reducing both cost and suffering. We're preparing our team to begin transplants as soon as possible,” he said.
According to the health ministry, liver transplants in Bangladesh could cost around Tk 30 lakh, compared to Tk 70 lakh to Tk 1 crore abroad.
