Power generation capacity now stands at 32,332 MW

SANGSAD BHABAN, April 2, 2026 (BSS)- Country’s total power generation capacity is now 32,332 megawatts (MW), of which grid-based power generation capacity stands at 28,919 MW.

Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Iqbal Hassan Mahmood said this in the parliament today.

Responding to a question from ruling party lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain (Dhaka-18) in the House, the minister said that on an average 14,500 to 15,000 MW of electricity is being generated daily as of March 2026, depending on demand.

He informed the House that although there is currently no power shortage in the country according to demand, but temporary power disruptions may occur during peak time in summer due to primary fuel shortages, limitations in transmission and distribution infrastructure, maintenance activities, and natural factors such as storms and rainfall.

The minister said the government has taken a series of steps to increase power generation in line with growing demand and to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.

Iqbal said the power sector has been given the highest priority, with measures taken to diversify fuel sources for power generation and ensure the supply of primary fuel.

According to the minister, a 180-day action plan has been formulated in line with the government’s election manifesto, alongside short, medium and long term plans to increase power generation and develop transmission and distribution infrastructure.

He added that public awareness campaign through leaflets and videos are being conducted to promote energy conservation, while holiday staggering, demand-side and supply-side management are also being implemented.

The minister further said that renewable energy is being prioritized, adequate funding is being ensured in the Annual Development Programme (ADP), and power projects are being closely monitored to ensure timely implementation.

He also noted that problems in project implementation are being identified and resolved quickly to maintain steady progress.
