DHAKA, Feb 05, 2026 (BSS) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and 11-party Alliance–nominated candidate for the Dhaka-5 constituency, Kamal Hossain, has outlined a development vision focused on improving living standards of people, strengthening healthcare services, reviving local businesses and ensuring zero tolerance for corruption, if elected in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad polls.
In an interview with Mohiuddin M Mahi, staff reporter of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Kamal Hossain said his election commitments were shaped through extensive consultations with people from all sections of society, including students, youths, women, workers and professionals.
“I have spoken to people from all walks of life. They shared their opinions in writing, through voice messages and SMS. Based on their aspirations, I have prepared my plans,” he said.
Identifying education as a key concern in Dhaka-5, he said the area lacked adequate government educational institutions. “Our main target is to establish a government college. Alongside this, we will improve schools, colleges and madrasas and ensure qualitative improvement in education sector,” he said.
On healthcare, Kamal Hossain said the constituency remained far behind in terms of facilities and services. “Insha’Allah, we will establish a 250 to 500-bed hospital where the presence of qualified doctors will be ensured and international-standard medical services will be provided,” he said.
Referring to economic development, he said reviving closed industries was essential for employment generation. Two major jute mills—Latif Bawany Jute Mills and Karim Jute Mill—had remained shut for years, he said, adding that initiatives would be taken to reopen both.
“We will create employment opportunities for our youths by developing them as skilled manpower and ensuring jobs at home and abroad,” he added.
The Jamaat candidate also stressed the need for modern urban management. He said water logging would be addressed through modern drainage systems, while the large waste dumping station at Jatrabari would be brought under an improved waste management framework to stop the spread of foul odour and germs and to protect public health.
Reiterating his stance against lawlessness, Kamal Hossain said extortion, illegal occupation, terrorism and business syndicates would not be tolerated. “We will bring corruption down to zero, Insha’Allah. I will not engage in corruption, and corruption will not be allowed anywhere around us,” he said.
He also said the persistent gas crisis in the area would be addressed through initiatives at both national and international levels.
Speaking about his political philosophy, he said his core objective was to establish a society based on justice and fairness. “My pledge is to realise the aspirations of the July martyrs. My main focus is building a society founded on justice and fairness by eliminating corruption,” he said.
On the election code of conduct, Kamal Hossain said he and his party strictly respected the law. “If we do not respect the law, how can we legislate? An MP’s responsibility is to enact laws, oversee their implementation and formulate budgets.
That is why obeying the law is essential,” he said. However, he alleged that a lack of a level playing field was affecting the campaign, claiming that his campaign materials were being removed and female activists were being threatened and harassed.
Expressing optimism about the election outcome, Kamal Hossain said the response from the grassroots had been encouraging. “Wherever we go, people are eager to vote for the 'Daripalla' (Scale) symbol. We are receiving strong support at the field level,” he said.
Recalling his past imprisonment, he said shared experiences of repression had united his supporters. “I have been to jail nine times and spent 853 days behind bars. Many of my activists have also been imprisoned. We are all victims of injustice, now standing together,” he said.
He said the people were now politically conscious and hopeful about change. “I expect and firmly believe that if the 'Daripalla' (scales) symbol is allowed to compete fairly, Insha’Allah, victory will be ours,” he added.
