PARIS, France, Sept 7, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The landslide victory of Germany's far-right AfD party in a regional election is a "serious moment", France's Europe minister said Sunday, calling for politicians to listen to voters with humility.

 The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party won comfortably in Saxony-Anhalt state according to according to projections by public broadcasters ARD and ZDF.

 "This is a serious moment in Europe, seeing the far right win in a regional election in Germany," Benjamin Haddad said on X.

 "We must listen with humility to the anger, the concerns, the fears, and respond to them," he added.

 "But nationalism and xenophobia will never be a solution," he added.

 "We cannot forget our history. That is the meaning behind the choices made by France and Germany."

 The broadcasters' projections gave the AfD 44 percent, more than doubling its support, and far ahead of the around 18 percent for the centre-right CDU of Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
