BEIJING, Sept 4, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The death toll from a mudslide in Tibet on the China-Nepal border last week rose from 21 to 31 people, Beijing's state media said Friday, with 531 people still missing.

"As of 6 pm (1000 GMT) on September 4, the disaster had resulted in 31 deaths and left 531 people unaccounted for," state news agency Xinhua reported.

The latest update comes nine days after the flood, which has killed nearly 1,300 people and left more than 5,000 missing in Nepal.

The disaster struck when a mass of ice and rock broke away from the north face of Nepal's Langtang Lirung mountain, sending a huge mass of debris racing down the valley.

The previous toll on the Chinese side of the border, reported on Wednesday evening, was 21 dead and 541 missing.

Chinese authorities have kept tight control over media access to the affected area in Tibet and sources of information.

The country's state media has neither shared the names of the missing nor published much footage of the families' reactions.
