French fishing boat sinks in Channel with two missing

NANTES, France, Aug 31, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - A French fishing boat has sunk in the Channel and two men are missing, French maritime authorities said Sunday.

The Maranello trawler sent a distress call on Saturday off the coast of the English port of Plymouth, reporting problems with its fishing gear, France's Atlantic prefecture said.

A nearby trawler was able to rescue three of the five crew members before the Maranello sank, it said.

Joint French and British sea and air rescue operations were "suspended pending further information" at the end of the day Sunday, Britain's Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.

One of the three rescued sailors, who was injured, was airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in England. The other two sailors were taken to Plymouth.
