Russia says strike kills one in southwest

MOSCOW, July 29, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - A strike on a port city in southwestern Russia killed one person and wounded at least one other, the region's governor said on Wednesday.

Rocket debris from a strike on Taganrog fell on residential buildings, killing a woman and injuring a man, Rostov region Governor Yury Slyusar said.

"Residents of the building are being evacuated. A temporary accommodation centre has been set up," Slyusar wrote on Telegram.

Ukraine has escalated its retaliatory strikes on Russia in recent months, partly to pressure Moscow to the negotiating table after nearly four-and-a-half years of war.

Last month was the deadliest for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022, as Moscow ramped up its long-range strikes on towns and cities across Ukraine, according to the United Nations.
