ABUJA, July 20, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Dozens of people are feared to have drowned after a boat capsized in northwestern Nigeria's Jigawa state, authorities told AFP on Monday.

Up to 40 people drowned "when their boat was crossing the river, including women and children," police spokesman Shi'isu Adam said of the Sunday accident, adding that six bodies had been recovered so far.

Emergency responders gave a lower toll, saying that five people were confirmed dead with up to 20 still missing, while 15 passengers had been rescued.
