Two bodies unearthed in Mexico may be missing US couple

MEXICO CITY, June 20, 2026 (AFP) - Mexican authorities are investigating whether two bodies unearthed near Mexico City belong to two US citizens who disappeared last month, a judicial source told AFP on Friday.

The remains were found in a clandestine grave in a forested area outside Mexico City, and are believed to be Zafar Padamsee Mawani and Guillermo Jafett Hidalgo, who were last seen May 20 after they moved to Mexico from Chicago.

Family members told US media the couple has been found dead.

Mawani and Hidalgo were dual US-Mexican citizens, according to local media.

"It pains my heart to know they took their lives away in such a cruel way," the niece of Hidalgo wrote on Facebook, after several days of sharing photos of them.

Local media reported that families detected irregular bank movements in the days following their disappearance.
