WARSAW, Dec 10, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Poland plans to give its remaining Soviet-designed MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine in exchange for drone technology, the defence minister said on Wednesday.
Poland has largely replaced its outdated Soviet-era aircraft with American F-16s and South Korean FA-50s, and is awaiting delivery of 32 F-35s ordered from Washington.
"The MiGs are reaching the end of their service life, meaning they will be withdrawn from the Polish army, and we are discussing their transfer with the Ukrainian side," Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz told Polish public radio broadcaster Trojka.
According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, this could also include "the transfer of technologies-for example in the field of drones and missiles-from Ukraine to Poland".
Poland, which handed over many of its MiG-29s to Ukraine after Russia launched its 2022 invasion, still has 14 of the aircraft, according to media reports.
"Talks are ongoing, and we are determined to finalize them as quickly as possible," Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized.
He added that Poland is already benefiting from Ukrainian expertise in military training on drones.
"The Ukrainians are the best when it comes to drones among all the countries with which we have good relations."
Poland, a member of the European Union and NATO, is among the staunchest supporters of its Ukrainian neighbour, serving in particular as a hub for military and humanitarian aid deliveries to Kyiv.
