MOSCOW, Oct 7, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Authorities in the remote Russian region of Tyumen said they had "neutralised" unidentified drones that media reports suggested were Ukrainian, in what would be one of Kyiv's deepest strikes.
Local media reports said the drones were targeting a large refinery in the oil-rich Siberian region.
"Three UAVs were detected and neutralised on the territory of an enterprise in the Antipino district of Tyumen," the regional government said late Monday, without identifying the origin of the drones or elaborating on what the enterprise was.
The warring sides rain down hundreds of drones on each other daily, but the attack more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) behind the front line is rare, and may indicate Ukraine is expanding its drone capacity.
Over the summer, Ukraine managed to hit a few Russian nuclear-capable bombers in a brazen assault deep inside the country through launching drones from Russian territory.
Kyiv is ramping up retaliatory strikes on Russia's energy and oil infrastructure, in what it sees as a legitimate response to Moscow's offensive and its daily attacks on Ukrainian cities, which have at times left millions without heating and power.
The attacks have triggered fuel shortages in several Russian regions and pushed up petrol prices.
Kyiv aims to cut off vital energy revenues for Moscow that it says fund the Russian army.
