TALLINN, Aug 26, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - A combat drone, presumed to be Ukrainian, went off course and exploded over Estonia without causing any casualties, the Baltic state and close Ukraine ally said Tuesday.

Pieces of the drone, which left a crater on crashing, were discovered by an agricultural worker near the southeastern town of Tartu, some 75 kilometres (45 miles) from the border with Russia.

"Based on preliminary data we have reasons to believe it was a Ukrainian drone targeting objectives on Russian territory," said Margo Palloson, director general of Estonia's Internal Security Service (ISS).

Palloson told reporters the device was able to be "diverted from its trajectory by Russian GPS jamming and other electronic warfare means, causing it to enter Estonian airspace."

Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said in a post on X that Russia has long used GPS jamming to disrupt air and maritime traffic in the region.

Neighbouring countries of Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly reported drone incursions from the territories of both warring neighbours.

Last week, the Polish defence minister denounced Russian "provocation" towards Poland and NATO after a Russian drone fell and exploded in a field in eastern Poland, again causing no casualties.

Warsaw noted on that occasion there have been incidents involving drones in Romania, Lithuania, and Latvia and that airspace violations have taken place "in almost all NATO countries, particularly in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, as well as in Poland, Romania, and Bulgaria".

In November 2022, two civilians were killed when a Ukrainian air defence missile fell on the Polish village of Przewodow, near the border.
