Mishty Khatun an inspiration for newcomers in handball

JAMALPUR, July 8, 2025 (BSS) - Mishty Khatun, a determined young woman from a remote village in Jamalpur, has risen to national prominence in handball by overcoming social and personal hurdles. Her journey from a small-town athlete to vice-captain of the national team is now inspiring a new generation of players. 

Currently the vice-captain of the national women's handball team, Mishty has played in numerous domestic and international matches, proving her skill and dedication to the sport. She has defied social norms with courage and determination to reach where she is today. 

The only daughter of Md Akkas Ali and Mst Lebuza Begum, Mishty hails from Khal Para in Narundi Union under Jamalpur Sadar upazila. Her sporting journey began with football while studying in Class VI at Narundi Syeda Naziba Akter Girls' High School, but she later shifted her focus to handball.

In 2017, she joined a women's handball training camp organized by the Jamalpur Sports Academy at the Jamalpur Stadium. She was later selected for the district handball team.

In the 1st Youth Bangladesh Games held in 2018 at the MA Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium in Dhaka, she captained the Jamalpur district handball team, leading them to a runner-up finish. She was also named the best player of the match for her outstanding performance.

Mishty has participated in several international tournaments, including the 5th South Asian Women's Handball Championship and the 8th Asian Women's Youth Handball Championship, both held in India in 2019.

She also represented Bangladesh in the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games held in Turkey in 2022, and participated in the 9th Bangladesh Games, representing the Jamalpur district team.

Speaking to BSS, Mishty said, "I want to build my career in handball. I'll try my best to represent Bangladesh at the international level."

When asked about her future plans, she said, "After my playing career, I want to contribute to building skilled handball players in the country."

District Sports Officer Afrin Akter Moni said Mishty Khatun has established herself as a successful handball player through her confidence and hard work.

Mishty can be a source of inspiration for many young newcomers in the sport across the district, she added.
