NETRAKONA, Dec 8, 2022 (BSS) - The ‘Tragedy Day’ a massacre carried out by the suicide bombers of banned outfit JMB at local Udichi office premises in 2005, was observed here today by paying tributes to the memories of the massacre victims.

On this day in 2005, a suicide bomber of the JMB carried out a bomb attack at the office of Netrakona Udichi Shilpi Gosthi killing eight persons including Udici‘s two front ranking leaders-Khaja Haider and Sudipto Paul Shelly and injured over 50 people.

To mark the day, Netrakona Tragedy Day Celebration Committee chalked out elaborate programs.

The day’s programs were formally started in the morning as the people of all walks of life including political leaders, people’s representatives, freedom fighters and cultural activists paid tributes by placing floral wreaths at the memorial monument of the victims at the Udici office premises here.

Those who at first placed floral wreaths at the memorial monument including the president of Awami League (AL) Netrakona district unit Advocate Amirul Islam, general secretary Advocate Shamsur Rahman Liton, chairman of Netrakona Zila Parishad Asit Kumar Sarker Sajal and Mayor of Netrakona Municipality Nazrul Islam Khan.

As part of the programs, a protest rally against the fundamentalism and militancy was brought out in the town.

A large number of local people including students wearing black badges joined the rally that ended at Netrakona Central Shaheed Minar premises after parading the main roads of the town. Local elites, freedom fighters, political leaders and public representatives led the rally.

A five-minute solemn silence was also observed in the district town from 10.40am to 10.45am today showing respect to the memories of the massacre victims.
