RAJSHAHI, Aug 4, 2021 (BSS)-Some 120 transgender people were given humanitarian assistance aimed at mitigating their financial hardships and starvation amid the nationwide lockdown caused by the adverse impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Each of them was given a food package containing 10 kilograms (Kgs) of rice, two-kg of potato, one-kg of lentil and one litre of edible oil.

The District Police Administration distributed the food support at the Police Line drill shed in the city today through maintaining health rules to contain Covid-19 spread.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Abdul Baten distributed the relief materials among the socially excluded people saying the beneficiaries should lead their life in disciplined ways.

Additional DIG Mozahidul Islam, Superintendents of Police Masud Hossain, Abdus Salam and Monirul Islam and Additional Superintendent of Police Ifte Khayer Alam were present on the occasion.

DIG Abdul Baten said the present government under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given recognition to the transgender population as third gender community side by side by ensuring voting rights to them.

With this breakthrough, this population can avail all the public sector legal privileges, he added.

He said the present government is very positive towards solving all the existing problems of the Hijra community. He urged the advantaged people to change their attitude toward the transgender and demanded quota for them in the education and job sectors.

DIG Baten said concerted efforts of all government and non-government entities concerned can be vital means of mainstreaming the transgender population through proper rehabilitation.
