CHATTOGRAM, July 29, 2026 (BSS) - The National Consumer Rights Protection Department has fined three business establishments Tk 170,000 for selling unhygienic and expired food items in Agrabad and Mohra areas of the city.

These infractions included the preparation of food in unsanitary conditions, the storage of stale food, and the sale of expired food 

The drive was conducted jointly by the Chattogram Divisional and District Offices of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department in collaboration with Chattogram Metropolitan Police on Tuesday in the WASA area of the city.

During the operation, Handi Restaurant was fined Tk 100,000 for preparing food in an unsanitary environment and for the presence of cockroaches in the food. 

Additionally, CP 5-Star Restaurant was fined Tk 20,000 for using burnt oil and for unsanitary food preparation, while Zaman Restaurant faced a fine of Tk 50,000 for selling old and stale food as well as for preparing food in unsanitary conditions. 

The campaign was led by Mohammad Faiz Ullah, Deputy Director of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department, assisted by officials of the consumer rights department.

They have urged relevant institutions to comply with hygiene regulations when preparing and serving food. 

The National Consumer Rights Protection Department has announced regular market monitoring will continue to ensure food safety and protect consumer rights, and instructed all food businesses to strictly follow hygiene standards in preparation and service.
