NARAYANGANJ, May 21, 2026 (BSS) - Cattle markets across Narayanganj have become increasingly active ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, but many buyers are now choosing to purchase sacrificial animals directly from local farms instead of waiting for the traditional markets.

Farm owners say the growing popularity of naturally fattened cattle has increased customer confidence, leading to advance bookings and strong sales this season.

According to the District Livestock Office, Narayanganj has prepared more sacrificial animals than the expected demand this year.

Official data shows that 6,537 farms across the district's five upazilas have collectively prepared 113,754 sacrificial animals, including bulls, oxen, cows, buffaloes, goats and sheep. In contrast, the estimated demand for Eid-ul-Azha stands at 103,047 animals, leaving a surplus of 10,707 animals.

Among the upazilas, Narayanganj Sadar has prepared the highest number of animals with 28,100, followed by Araihazar with 26,874, Sonargaon with 20,458, Bandar with 19,827 and Rupganj with 18,495 animals ready for sale.

A visit to Rabeya Agro Farm in Sadar upazila revealed a large crowd of visitors and buyers inspecting cattle ahead of the festival. Farm owner Zia Uddin said customers prefer farms that raise cattle naturally without using harmful drugs.

"We feed the animals with our own grass and grain-based food. Buyers trust us because we care for the animals like family members," he said, adding that bookings had started nearly two months ago and sales have been satisfactory.

To ensure healthy animals are sold during the Eid season, the Livestock Department has introduced special monitoring measures.

Narayanganj District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Abdul Mannan Mia said 22 veterinary teams will remain active in the district's cattle markets.

"Since Narayanganj is a densely populated district, the demand for sacrificial animals remains high every year. This time there is no shortage because production has been good," he said. "Our veterinary teams will monitor the markets to prevent the sale of sick animals and ensure a safe and festive environment during Eid-ul-Azha."

Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have also strengthened security arrangements at cattle markets across the district.

Narayanganj Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman Munshi said police have taken strict security measures to protect buyers and sellers during the Eid season.

"The entire district, including all sacrificial animal markets, has been brought under enhanced security coverage. Necessary steps have been taken to prevent criminal activities and ensure the safety of people and their property," he said.
