PATUAKHALI, May 20, 2026 (BSS) - In a joint operation conducted by the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the upazila administration in Galachipa, seized around 50 lakh pieces of illegal shrimp fries, locally known as Renupona, on Wednesday afternoon.

The operation was carried out in the Sagardi Road area of Galachipa upazila, where officials recovered shrimp fries of both Galda and Bagda shrimp species.

According to sources involved in the drive, the estimated market value of the seized shrimp fries is nearly Taka 2 crore. 

During the operation, law enforcement agencies also seized a truck which was allegedly being used to transport the fry, along with 40 drums used for storage.

However, the truck driver, helper, and four to five workers managed to flee the scene during the raid.

Galachipa Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ijazul Haque said the recovered shrimp fries had been released into the Ramnabad River to protect the aquatic ecosystem. He added that the seized truck was handed over to the Upazila Fisheries Department.

The UNO further said that the upazila administration and the Fisheries Department are continuing legal proceedings in connection with the incident.
