BAGERHAT, May 20, 2026 (BSS) - Fire Service and Civil Defence Week was observed in Bagerhat today with the theme "Firefighters have only one promise - to keep property and life safe".
Deputy Commissioner Golam Md. Baten formally inaugurated the programme at 9 am.

Later, a colourful rally was brought out in the town. After the rally, a discussion meeting was held at the Fire Service office hall room with Senior Station Officer (Acting) Sheikh Mamunur Rashid in the chair.
Addressing the discussion, the Deputy Commissioner said fire has become a major national concern in recent times, with the risk increasing due to lack of awareness, electrical short circuits, careless use of gas stoves and the impact of hot weather.
He said the Fire Service and Civil Defence not only works to extinguish fires but also plays a vital role in responding to disasters, road accidents, river rescue operations and other emergency situations.
"The members of the Fire Service are working tirelessly to protect lives and property at the risk of their own safety. Their dedication and sense of responsibility are truly commendable," he added.
Urging people to remain alert during the intense summer heat, he advised regular inspection of electrical connections in homes and businesses, avoiding unnecessary use of electrical appliances, switching off gas stoves after use, and keeping children away from fire sources.
Fire service officials, journalists, civil society members and people from various professions attended the programme.
