KUSHTIA, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - The re-excavation work of the Shimulia Canal in Khoksa upazila of the district was officially inaugurated today under the government's "Nationwide River-Drain-Canal and Watercourse Excavation and Re-Dredging" programme.
Kushtia Deputy Commissioner Md Touhid Bin-Hasan inaugurated the canal re-excavation activities as the chief guest at a ceremony held in the Shimulia area around 12:00 noon.
Among others present at the event were Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Abdul Wadud, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Zillur Rahman, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Mohammad Rijibul Islam, Khoksa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Alauddin, Kushtia Journalists Union (KUJ) President Abdur Razzak Bachchu, former Khoksa Upazila Parishad Chairman Syed Amjad Ali, Khoksa Upazila BNP President Alauddin Khan and General Secretary Principal Anisuzzaman.
Officials concerned said the seven-kilometer-long canal re-excavation project is being implemented on a voluntary basis. They said that the restoration of the canal is expected to help reduce waterlogging, boost agricultural production, and maintain ecological balance in the area.
The initiative is part of a broader nationwide effort aimed at improving water flow and revitalizing canals and waterways across the country.
