NARAIL, May 19, 2026 (BSS) - A total of 45,497 cattle have been prepared in the district for sacrifice ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha, according to the District Livestock Office.
The district's estimated demand for sacrificial animals stands at 39,733, leaving a surplus of 5,764 animals that can be supplied to other districts.
Officials said 15,868 animals have been prepared in Sadar upazila against a local demand of 14,133, creating a surplus of 1,735 animals.
In Lohagara upazila, farmers have prepared 13,609 animals while demand is estimated at 12,200, leaving 1,409 surplus cattle. Meanwhile, Kalia upazila has prepared 16,020 animals against a demand of 13,400, resulting in a surplus of 2,620 animals.
Farmers across the district have raised cattle and goats both at household level and in commercial farms for the Eid market.
Trading of sacrificial animals has already begun at 10 cattle markets across Sadar, Lohagara, and Kalia upazilas. Sellers said cattle prices are comparatively lower this year, while goat prices remain satisfactory.
Md. Ripon Mina, owner of "Rahul-Riya Agro Farm" in Kharia village under Sadar upazila, said his farm has prepared 20 to 22 cows for Eid-ul-Azha. Among them is a giant cow named "Bahubali," weighing around 25 maunds, with an asking price of Taka 10 lakh.
He said the farm's cows are being sold at prices ranging from Taka 4 lakh to Taka 5 lakh and have been raised using natural feed, including hay, chaff, grass, and other local food.
Other cattle sellers, including Himu Sheikh and Ajbahar Biswas from Raghunathpur village in Kalia upazila, also said that cattle prices are relatively affordable this season, attracting buyers to local markets.
District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Rashedul Haque said the livestock department is closely monitoring markets to ensure that no harmful or toxic substances are used in animal feeding.
Veterinary medical teams are regularly conducting health checks at cattle markets across the district.
Local buyers expressed satisfaction over the comparatively affordable prices of sacrificial animals this year.
