JASHORE, May 18, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested the main accused in the murder case of businessman Anisur Rahman in Abhaynagar upazila of the district.
The accused, Shah Mahmud, 38, was arrested during a late-night raid on Sunday at a house in the RN Road area of the district town, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Mirajul Islam said at a press briefing today.
Police said Shah Mahmud had been hiding there and was preparing to flee to India. A joint team of Abhaynagar Police Station, district Detective Branch (DB) and Cyber Crime Unit conducted the raid.
According to investigators, the murder stemmed from a long-standing dispute over the rent of a shop owned by the victim.
The incident occurred on May 6 near the Guakhola Pirbari Mosque area under Abhaynagar Police Station when Shah Mahmud, along with several associates, allegedly attacked Anisur Rahman during an altercation.
Critically injured Anisur was first taken to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital. He died on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 2:00 am on May 7.
Following the incident, the victim's wife Nahida Imam filed a murder case with Abhaynagar Police Station.
Police earlier arrested another suspect, Monir Hossain, in connection with the case.
During initial interrogation, Shah Mahmud reportedly confessed to his involvement in the murder and admitted he had planned to escape to India, police added.
