NAOGAON, May 17, 2026 (BSS) - A fierce nor’wester storm has caused extensive damage in Patnitala upazila of the district, leaving homes, shops, and infrastructure affected.

The sudden storm disrupted daily life, cut off electricity, and caused significant damage to Boro paddy fields. Minor damage has also been reported in other upazilas of the district.

Late Saturday night, a series of violent thunderstorms and lightning strikes triggered panic among residents. Houses and shops in villages including Chhota Chandpur, Bora Chandpur, Harirampur, Mahmudpur, Chakjoyram, Thuknipara, Notunhat, and Puratan Bazar Palsa were severely affected.

Traffic was disrupted for about two hours after a banyan tree fell at the Sardarpara intersection. Fire service personnel, along with local residents, quickly cleared the debris to restore normal traffic flow.

A massive banyan tree also fell in front of Najipur Model Government High School, blocking the road, while several large trees were uprooted from the Najipur Government College premises.

Shamsul Alam of Chhota Chandpur reported that the tin house he had been building collapsed during the storm. Approximately 400 thatched houses were also destroyed in various areas of Najipur municipality.

Power lines were severed, leading to widespread electricity outages, and telephone and internet services were disrupted.

Local administration and public representatives have visited affected areas and assured residents of necessary assistance. Upazila Nirbahi officer Rifat Ara urged everyone to remain vigilant in the ongoing adverse weather conditions.
