BAGERHAT, May 15, 2026 (BSS) - The long-neglected historic execution site (Badhyabhumi) on the banks of the Bhairab River in Bagerhat has come under a modernisation initiative aimed at preserving the solemn memory of the Great Liberation War through aesthetic restoration and structured development.

Barrister Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain, Administrator of the Bagerhat Zila Parishad, formally inaugurated the development work on Thursday afternoon.

The project is being implemented by the Zila Parishad with an estimated allocation of around Tk 15 lakh. Officials said the initiative seeks to transform the deteriorated and damaged site into a dignified and visually enhanced memorial space in honour of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War.

The upgraded design is expected to turn the area into a notable historical landmark reflecting both national heritage and aesthetic value.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior administrative officials, including Zila Parishad Chief Executive Officer Md. Abu Riaz and Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mst. Atia Khatun, along with local political and social figures, including District BNP Member Secretary and Freedom Fighter Mozaffar Rahman Alam.

Several other local leaders and residents were also present.

In his address, Barrister Sheikh Mohammad Zakir Hossain criticised alleged misuse of previous allocations for the project, saying earlier funds were not utilised effectively. He expressed hope that the renewed initiative would ensure proper preservation and meaningful development of the site.

He further said the Bhairab River's natural beauty and navigability would enhance the visitor experience once the project is completed, adding that the redeveloped Badhyabhumi would serve as an educational and historical space for younger generations to learn about the Liberation War and pay tribute to the martyrs.

The ceremony concluded with prayers seeking eternal peace for the souls of the martyrs of the Great Liberation War.
