NARAYANGANJ, May 11, 2026 (BSS) - Four members of the same family sustained burn injuries after a gas pipeline leak triggered an explosion in a residential building in Fatullah area of the district on Monday morning.
The injured were identified as Abdul Kader, 50, a battery-powered auto-rickshaw driver, and his three sons - Mehedi, 17, Sakib, 16, and Rakib, 16.
All four were admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for treatment.
Abdul Kader hailed from Matlab upazila in Chandpur and had been living as a tenant in Shawkat Mia's house in the Lakhibazar area of Fatullaha.
Witnesses said the powerful blast shattered the doors and windows of the ground-floor room and burned household furniture.
Neighbours rushed to the scene immediately after hearing the explosion and rescued the victims before taking them to the hospital. Abdul Kader's wife escaped unharmed as she was outside the house at the time of the incident.
Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, residential surgeon at the burn institute, said Abdul Kader suffered burns to 57 percent of his body, while Mehedi sustained 18 percent burns, Sakib 17 percent, and Rakib 25 percent.
Md. Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence in Narayanganj, said preliminary findings suggest that gas leaking from a pipeline accumulated inside the room overnight, effectively turning it into a "gas chamber." The explosion likely occurred when a spark ignited the accumulated gas in the morning.
Authorities said the incident is under investigation.
