KISHOREGANJ, May 9, 2026 (BSS) - Water levels in the rivers of the district continued to decline on Saturday following several days of dry weather and sunshine, offering much-needed relief to farmers in the district’s haor areas.

According to flood and water-level data released at 9:00 am by the office of the Executive Engineer of the Kishoreganj Water Development Board, water levels at all monitoring points across the district fell over the last 24 hours.

The Dhanu-Baulai River at the Itna point recorded a water level of 3.14 metres, down by 10 centimetres from the previous day. The Magra River at Chhatraghat dropped by 8 centimetres to 2.77 metres, while the Kalni River at Ashtagram fell by 7 centimetres to 2.40 metres. The Meghna River at Bhairab Bazar also declined by 9 centimetres, reaching 1.50 metres.

Officials from the Water Development Board said that water in all rivers across the district is still flowing below danger levels, ranging from 101 to 430 centimetres below the warning mark at different points.

The improvement in weather conditions has restored activity across the haor region, where farmers have resumed efforts to salvage paddy from submerged fields, dry harvested crops and transport produce to safer locations. In several areas, paddy was seen being carried by boat.

However, officials cautioned that the situation could worsen again if upstream flooding or fresh heavy rainfall occurs, potentially causing river water levels to rise once more.

Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Md. Sajjad Hossain, said authorities are monitoring river conditions round the clock and advising farmers to harvest paddy quickly and move it to secure locations.

Deputy Director of the district Department Agricultural Extension (DAE) Dr. Sadiqur Rahman said that, according to the latest estimates, around 13,479 hectares of paddy land across 13 upazilas of the district remain under water. Approximately 52,500 farmers have been affected.

He added that the process of preparing a detailed list of affected farmers is currently underway.
