PIROJPUR, May 5, 2026, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a schoolgirl in Bhandaria upazila of the district in 2018.
Judge S. M. Moniruzzaman of the district Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict in the presence of the convict this morning.
The court also fined the convict Taka 10,000, with an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment.
The convict, Md. Suman Howlader, is the son of Md. Hamed Howlader from Junia village under Telikheli union in Bhandaria upazila.
According to prosecution, the victim was an eighth-grade student of Junia Secondary School. Due to family circumstances, she had been living at her maternal uncle Nizam Hawlader's house in the same village while continuing her studies.
The court heard that the accused had been harassing the victim regularly on her way to and from school. On March 3, 2018, around 3:30 pm, he allegedly abducted her after school hours and took her to an empty house belonging to a local resident, where he raped her.
Later, her uncle filed a case with Bhandaria Police Station on March 16, 2018, naming Suman Howlader as the accused.
Following an investigation, police submitted a charge-sheet to the court. After examining the evidence and testimonies, the tribunal found the accused guilty and handed down the sentence.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Nurul Islam Sardar Shahjahan confirmed the matter.
