GAIBANDHA, May 4, 2026 (BSS) - Speakers at a function here today stressed the importance of early identification of obstetric fistula patients and bringing them under free treatment to achieve a fistula-free Bangladesh by 2030.
They said obstetric fistula is a severe childbirth injury caused by prolonged and obstructed labour without timely and quality medical care. Women giving birth at home remain at higher risk due to lack of skilled health professionals.
The remarks came at a meeting on fistula patient identification held at the Civil Surgeon's Office in the town this morning.
The Civil Surgeon's Office organised the meeting with support from CIPRB and UNFPA Bangladesh.
Civil Surgeon Dr Rafiquzzaman attended the programme as chief guest, while Deputy Director of the Department of Family Planning Md Tariqul Islam was present as special guest.
Among others, Deputy Directors Imam Hashem (Social Services), Mirazul Haque (Islamic Foundation) and Nargis Jahan (Women Affairs) spoke as guests of honour.
UNFPA field officer Dr Shaheen Akhter and gynaecologist Dr Tahera Akhter Mony presented key insights on causes and treatment of the disease. A multimedia presentation by Dr Sirajum Monira highlighted the district situation, noting that 172 patients had undergone successful surgery by 2025.
Speakers emphasised institutional delivery and awareness activities to prevent the disease. The Civil Surgeon also sought cooperation from all stakeholders to identify patients and ensure treatment at designated medical college hospitals.
A campaign to identify fistula patients will be conducted in Sadullapur and Saghata upazilas from May 7 to May 21.
Health officials, NGO workers, journalists and other stakeholders attended the meeting.
