8 construction workers killed in Sylhet road accident

SYLHET, May 03, 2026 (BSS) – Eight construction workers were killed in a tragic road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway this morning.

The accident occurred around 7:00 am today near Telibazar Bridge under South Surma upazila on the Sylhet–Dhaka highway, when the workers were travelling in a DI pickup van towards Sunamganj to join their workplace.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Manjurul Alam told BSS that a jackfruit-loaded truck collided head-on with the workers’ pickup van in the Telibazar area, leaving four people dead on the spot.

“Three of the critically injured died after being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Another injured person died at a nearby private hospital,” he said.

Several other injured victims are currently undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where their condition is reported to be critical, police and hospital sources said.

Following the incident, rescue operations were carried out by police and local firefighters, who recovered the bodies and rushed the injured to nearby medical facilities. Traffic on the busy highway was disrupted for some time but was later restored.

Police have confirmed the identities of four of the deceased. They are: Md Suroj Ali, 60, son of late Khorem Ali of Bhati Para village in Derai upazila of Sunamganj; Mosammat Munni, 35, daughter of Abdul Basir of Seshti village in the same upazila; Mohammad Faridul, 35, son of late Nur Salam of Nurnagar area; and Mohammad Badrul, 30, son of Sujat Ali of Lalar Gaon area under Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet.

The identities of the remaining four victims are yet to be confirmed, police said.

South Surma Police Station Officer-in-Charge said the bodies of the deceased have been kept at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy and necessary legal procedures.
