Two killed in wild elephant attack in Cox' Bazar

COX'S BAZAR, April 30, 2026 (BSS) - A mother and her three-year-old daughter were killed in a wild elephant attack on Thursday in Ramu upazila of the district.

The incident occurred around 5.00 am in Syed Colony of West Khuniapalong area under Khuniapalong union of the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Chemon Ara, 25, wife of Ekram Mia and her daughter Asma Bibi, residents of the area. 

According to local residents, a herd of three wild elephants entered the settlement in the early hours, damaging boundary walls and uprooting trees, which triggered panic among villagers.

Eyewitness Belal Uddin said Ekram Mia and his family rushed outside after hearing the commotion. While he managed to escape with his six-year-old son, Rehan Uddin, the mother and younger child were attacked and killed on the spot.

Md. Tosaddek Hossain, Dhoapalong Range Officer of the Bangladesh Forest Department under Cox's Bazar South Forest Division, said forest officials responded to the incident and drove the elephant herd back into the deeper forest. Measures are being taken to monitor and manage elephant movement in the region.

Ramu Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Md. Farid said a police team visited the scene, and the bodies were later handed over to the family. 

Ramu Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Fazle Rabbani Chowdhury said the administration will provide necessary assistance to the affected family.
