Pregnant woman killed as tree falls during Nor'wester storm in Naogaon

NAOGAON, April 27, 2026 (BSS) - A pregnant woman was killed after a tree collapsed during a sudden Nor'wester storm in Atrai upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The victim, Arafatun, 20, sustained critical injuries when a eucalyptus tree fell on her shelter in Bede Palli, located along the banks of the Atrai River near Atrai Government College ground.

According to police and local sources, 25 to 30 families from the Bede community had been living in makeshift polythene shelters in the area. A sudden storm accompanied by strong winds and rain struck the region in the morning, causing the tree to uproot and fall onto Arafatun.

She was rescued in a severely injured condition and initially taken to Atrai Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of her injuries, she was later transferred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where she died around 10:00 am while undergoing treatment.

Atrai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Karim confirmed the incident.
