BARISHAL, April 25, 2026 (BSS) - The Barishal City Corporation (BCC) has officially launched a canal cleaning and tree plantation program in the city, marking the beginning of its two-month-long 'Cleanliness Month' initiative scheduled for May and June.

The inauguration ceremony took place today in the Zia Road area near Nathullabad, with BCC Administrator Bilkis Akhter Jahan Shirin attending as the chief guest.

Speaking at the event, the administrator emphasized that systematic canal cleaning would help reduce the spread of mosquitoes, flies, and waterborne diseases.

She added that the initiative would also play a significant role in alleviating waterlogging in the city during the upcoming monsoon season. According to officials, all canals within the city will be cleaned in phases under this program.

As part of the environmental effort, neem saplings were planted along both sides of the canal during the inauguration. Authorities also announced an ambitious plan to plant approximately 50,000 saplings across canal banks and along the median strips of major four-lane roads in the city. This plantation drive aligns with the government's broader tree plantation campaign.

Officials from the city corporation, including the cleanliness officer, along with other staff members, were present at the event.
