RANGPUR, March 11, 2026 (BSS) - After the economic conditions of the common people improved, Eid markets are now witnessing record sales amid overflowing crowds of shoppers in the city, nearly nine days before the Eid-ul-Fitr festival.
Traders and shoppers said Eid shopping has already reached its peak amid tight security measures at various markets, shopping malls, complexes and business centers, and makeshift roadside markets in the metropolis.
Currently, the colorfully decorated markets have taken on a festive look, with crowds of men, women, boys, teenagers, students and youth gathering, and despite the best efforts of law enforcement agencies, their movement has caused traffic congestion in the city.
According to market sources, the comparatively high prices of Eid items, especially clothes, are not affecting buyers this time. Eid markets are witnessing huge sales of all kinds of items till midnight.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police has strengthened security measures and introduced special road traffic arrangements so that people can move easily during rush hours and buy Eid items in the market and avoid any inconvenience or untoward incident.
Hundreds of police, volunteers and Ansar-VDP members, RAB-13, and intelligence personnel in uniform and plain clothes are seen patrolling the city's markets, shopping malls, commercial centers, and roads and highways.
Talking to BSS in various markets today and last night, shoppers said that the prices of men's, women's, children's and babies' clothing and other Eid items are 15 to 20 percent higher this year compared to last year and those are fluctuating almost daily.
On Wednesday morning, Bhanga Masjid Market, Station Market, Zilla Parishad Community Mini Super Market, Salek Market, Honumantola Hawkers Market, Shah Jamal Market, known for shopping by middle-class and lower-class people, were seen overflowing with people.
Low-income people now rely on makeshift markets and footpaths. As a result, there is no shortage of sales anywhere.
Shopping is going on in full swing in the city's elite markets like Royalty Mega Mall, City Plaza, Moti Plaza, Dorjibari Market, Jahaj Company Shopping Complex, Rangpur Super Market, 'Ranggan', RAMC Shopping Complex, Royalty Megamall, Golden Tower Shopping Complex and Maya Exclusive Fashion House.
Salespersons said hundreds of rushing buyers are purchasing sarees, three-pieces, shirts and pants, shoes, sandals, Punjabis and other Eid items according to their choice from 10 am to 1 am.
The Zilla Parishad Community Mini Super Market, one of the best shopping malls in the divisional city of Rangpur, is now full of huge local and imported fashionable new clothes.
Pakistani and Indian clothes are one of the best choices for women this time in the market. Shopkeepers are also satisfied with the sales. They say that there is always a demand for Indian and Pakistani clothes.
On the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr festival, along with Sarara and Gharara, popular Mariabi, Aganur, Sadabahar and other fashionable clothing have become very popular in the market, like in the others too.
Parvez, manager of the Senjuti Bastra Bipni of Zilla Parishad Community Mini Super Market, said, "Along with Pakistani clothes, the demand for Indian boutiques is very high this time.
"This market is crowded with people from both the middle and upper classes throughout the day till midnight on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr," he said.
Clothing sellers at different markets said, each piece of Jamdani sarees is being sold between Taka 6,000 and Taka 35,000, three-pieces between Taka 2,000 to 30,000, cargo jeans pants, Discard-2, Sim Fit and formal T- Shirts between Taka 1,000 to Taka 10,500, children's lehenga, masakkali, single top, topset, genji sets between Taka 1,800 and Taka 15,000, Punjabis between Taka 1,400 and Taka 15,000 and attractive Sherwani between Taka 8,000 to Taka 52,000 at this moment.
University students Moumita and Kalpona Akhter at Rangpur Super Market said they already completed purchasing Eid clothes and other items at higher prices this year.
Housewives Hosne Ara, Nainun Nishat and Mahbuba Rahman at Hanumantha Hawkers Market said they were purchasing shoes, cosmetics and other smaller Eid items after completing the purchase of Eid clothes for family members.
Couple Rokaiya Haider and Ali Haider at Jahaz Company Shopping Complex said they purchased Eid clothes, cosmetics and all other Eid items for their children at 20 to 30 percent higher prices this time than the previous years.
Talking to BSS, businesspersons at Rangpur Super Market, Salek Market and Shah Jamal Market expressed satisfaction over record sales of Eid clothes, shoes, cosmetics and other goods.
President of Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry Emdadul Hossain Emdad said sales of Eid items are increasing everyday following a boost of incomes of common people.
"Traders are also happy to see the phenomenal sales of Eid items in various markets in the metropolis," he added.
