KHULNA, March 10, 2026 (BSS) - National Disaster Preparedness Day was observed in Khulna today under the theme "Fight through disaster preparedness, build a youthful Bangladesh."
The day was marked with a discussion meeting and practical demonstrations on safety measures during fire incidents and earthquakes at the Khulna Deputy Commissioner's office premises this morning.
Md Ariful Islam, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division at the Deputy Commissioner's Office, addressed the programme as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted that public awareness is the key tool for disaster preparedness. Proper planning and preparation can prevent accidents from escalating into major disasters, reducing the loss of lives and property.
He noted that Bangladesh's geographical location makes it highly vulnerable to natural disasters and urged everyone to stay prepared at all times to face such challenges. He also stressed that the nation must advance with courage and collective effort.
Emphasizing environmental protection, Md Ariful Islam said large-scale tree plantation can help maintain ecological balance and contribute to building a safer and risk-free Bangladesh.
The event was chaired by District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Abdul Karim. Acting Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Md Masud Sardar, officials from various government departments, and representatives of non-government organisations also attended.
As part of the day's activities, a practical demonstration was held at the Khulna Collectorate premises on how to protect oneself during fire incidents and earthquakes.
Earlier, a colourful procession was taken out from Shaheed Hadis Park to mark the observance of the day. Khulna Deputy Commissioner A S M Jamshed Khondker inaugurated the rally, which passed through several city roads and concluded at the Collectorate premises, with participation from people across different walks of life.
